It is the ups and downs that make life interesting and fun. Spiritually speaking,
life may even be compared to a playground. As
a child I found myself spending timeless hours in the summertime at the neighborhood park.
Monkey bars, see-saws, push merry-go-rounds, swings, and sliding boards were the
entertainment of the day. Looking back and remembering the variety of forms the playground
took helps me realize the Truth of how life operates.
A see-saw cannot serve its purpose without going up and down. And, it is in the downward
motion that one rises off his seat and feels the weightlessness of one's body. Balancing
in the middle would prevent a see-saw from being what it's intended to be. Yet how often
in life one wants his life to be "perfectly balanced"!
One cannot utilize the purpose of a swing without going back and forth. The exhileration
of the backwards motion after pumping as high as one can go on the swing, brings squeels
of delight to children. Yet as adults, when we have gone as high as we think we can on the
road to self-discovery, on the road to success, then suddenly find ourselves going
backward at an uncomprehensible speed, we get confused and depressed, failing to realize
the forward and backward are one and the same. It is still the same "swing".
The high-laddered steel sliding board I frequented contained bumps and curves which made
the slide down much more exciting than the straight-down sliding board on the other side
of the playground. That was for "babies". Coming down a slide, even to the point
of impacting the ground, motivates one to run to the ladder and climb back up. Climbing
the ladder was not the joy. It is in the "coming down" that one feels the
breeze. The obstacles along the way bring added pleasure.
A playground has many forms of joy for the young. The forms take on names such as see-saw,
swings, and sliding boards, but it's still one playground. Like a playground, life also
has many forms, but it's still one life. Everything is One, and that One is God.
There are no opposite natures, no opposite opinions, no opposite to Truth. What appears to
be an opposite is simply a concept of one's imagination or false education. Would one
enjoy a see-saw if it stayed balanced in the middle? Would one enjoy a swing if it never
went up and down? Instead of realizing there are no opposites, people tend to see one side
of life good and another side bad. One side "up" and the other side
"down". What man calls opposites, he fails to realize are one and the same.
Life's purpose is change, not stagnation.
Balance is in change. In the activity of the see-saw is balance. Going up, then going
down. In the motion of the swing is balance. Going forward, going back. During one's
summer trip to the beach, watch the water. In the flowing of the tides is balance. Coming
in, going out. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God is always changing,
maintaining "balance" in life, individual life included.
God is not stagnant. God is always appearing as new forms, new ideas, new inspiration. It
is in the change that God remains constant. One might say God is "constantly
changing", yet all the while remaining constant, solid, secure.
As misguided humans, we tend to believe the bad will always be with us. That a
"dis-ease" is uncurable. How often do we tend to believe the opposite is also
true - that this "good fortune" we're having will be ongoing forever? No, change
will occur, but just as God is the solid rock of our foundation, God will be the change.
In that change is the balance one desires, the balance encompassing perfection.
If one is experiencing some "ups and downs" in life, if one is experiencing some
"backwards swing" in life, realize the Truth.
"How do I do this?" you might ask.
Meditate. Meditate on the nature of God. Whatever that means to you, that alone is
sufficient. In meditation, in your "aloneness" with God, the Truth that applies
to your situation will be uncovered. With a new understanding freedom appears. And in this
new freedom, one will swing through the elements of nature unencumbered.
All is well.
